East Otis Schoolhouse
The One-Room Schoolhouse in East Otis was constructed about 1850 and used until its closure in 1949. We are restoring it to that time period as one of the few remaining examples of mid-20th century education.
The East Otis One Room Schoolhouse has been designated an Historic Site by the Massachusetts Historical Commision.
The Otis Historical Commission and Otis Preservation Trust are working with the Massachusetts Historical Commission, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and the Town of Otis to fund the restoration of the schoolhouse. The foundation, structure, roof, and exterior clapboards have already been restored, with work on the interior to commence soon. Although the current condition of the East Otis School requires extensive recontruction, it remains as an example of one of the last one-room schoolhouses that was still in use until 1949.
When the East Otis Schoohouse reopens, it will serve as a museum for schoolchildren to experience and learn about attending school in the early years of Otis. We also envision making the space available for townspeople to use for video presentations.
